The gaming world is holding it’s breath in anticipation of the upcoming official announcements of the newest high tech next generation gaming consoles from both Microsoft and Sony.
The official releases are promised to be just in time for the 2019 holiday season which is coming up fast, so we expect the announcements to come any day now.
The gaming community is chomping at the bit to get their hands on these high powered next gen consoles, and sales are expected to be through the roof.
Why All The Hype?
The current lineup of consoles has only featured minor updates and improvements over the past few years, but this new generation of consoles will be a major leap forward in technical specifications and capabilities.
At the time of this article, neither Microsoft nor Sony have released their final specs but testing units have been out in the wild for weeks now and there are some incredibly impressive specs that are to be included in both of these upcoming devices.
Powerful Chipsets
Both the new Microsoft Xbox (currently known by the codename Project Skarlett or Xbox Two) and the Sony PS5 will be running on custom-built version of the third generation AMD Ryzen chipset, boasting 8 cores with AMD’s new Zen 2 architecture and Navi graphics.
The new chipset will support the highly desirable ray tracing technology to perform intensive lighting processing that previously required a very expensive high-end gaming computer to achieve.
Higher Resolutions
Both new consoles will also feature the capability to run 8K content (7680 × 4320 UHD) which is currently some of the highest resolution content currently available. We say “8K content” rather than games because it’s not clear yet if either console will actually game at 8K, but even if they can it will be quite awhile before any 8K games become commonplace. But you can bet your favorite controller that more and more games will be coming out with higher resolutions over the next few years, so these consoles are designed with the future in mind.
In addition to the 8K resolution the consoles are also boating 120Hz refresh rates which means ultra-smooth movement and details to match your latest and greatest HD TV.
Faster Storage & Memory
In stride with the trends of gaming PC’s and increasing speeds, both consoles will also feature SSD (solid state drive) hard drives to increase loading and saving speeds making your console experience faster than ever.
There’s no official word yet on RAM specs but we expect to see some high speed GDDR6 at least to compliment the powerful CPU/GPU and the faster SSD drives.
Which Will You Buy?
We expect the overall performance, features, and prices (~$500 range) to be very similar between both upcoming consoles, so buying decisions will come down to brand preference and which console features the exclusive games you want to play more.
As with previous generations of consoles, each manufacturer shares some popular gaming titles but also each feature some of their own exclusive titles that will only be available for their respective console.
Stay tuned for upcoming official launches and specs as soon as they are released!
