Not All Macs Will Support Using An iPad As A Secondary Display

As part of the macOS Catalina update, Apple announced a new feature called Sidecar which allows users with an iPad to turn it into a secondary display while using their Mac computer. There were rumors that Apple could be building in this functionality into macOS, and the good news was that it turned out to be true.

However, before you get too excited, it turns out that not all Macs will support the feature. Apple has yet to disclose the details, but according to developer Steve Troughton-Smith, he has found a list of Mac computers that will support it. This includes the 27-inch iMac from 2015 or newer, the 2016 MacBook Pro or newer, the 2018 Mac mini or new, the 2019 Mac Pro, the 2018 MacBook Air, and the 2016 MacBook.

This is a very short list when you consider that the macOS Catalina update will be compatible with Mac computers dating as far back as 2012. It is unclear as to what the reason might be for why Sidecar will only support those few Mac computers, but unfortunately, that seems to be the reality for now.

The good news is that while some companies such as Luna might have felt blindsided by the announcement of Sidecar, the upside here is that those with older Macs will need to use their software if they want to use their iPads as a secondary display. Not to mention, for all we know, the third-party software might actually be better.
